Qualifying Medical Conditions

Note that these policies and procedures are tentative until the final Florida statutes are formulated by the State Legislature and Health Dept in 2017 and are subject to change at any time. .The List of Approved Conditions for a Florida Medical Marijuana Prescription

Florida’s government has an official list of medical conditions for which medical marijuana is considered an applicable treatment. The legal language of Amendment 2 was written to explicitly allow medical marijuana to be provided as a treatment for patients with the following specific diseases:

  • cancer
  • epilepsy
  • glaucoma
  • HIV
  • AIDS
  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
  • Crohn's disease
  • Parkinson's disease
  • multiple sclerosis

Amendment 2 was also designed to allow licensed physicians to certify patients for medical marijuana use after diagnosing them with some "other debilitating medical conditions of the same kind or class as or comparable to those enumerated."

If you don’t see your condition listed, don’t lose heart. Florida has actually done better than some of the other 20 states that have legalized medical marijuana. While other states might stick closely to their “authorized” list, Florida prefers to use a broad-spectrum approach. The government has allowed doctors to determine if you qualify for medical marijuana use. That means even if your specific condition isn’t listed on the state’s sanctioned roster, it is possible that you can use medical marijuana to treat it, so long as your doctor determines that the benefits of the medication outweigh the risks. Then, all you have to do is apply for a license with the Florida Department of Health and choose a dispensary. Your doctor must determine that the benefits of taking medical marijuana for your condition outweigh the potential health risks of your condition.
